Avida xlab’s mandate is to push the boundaries of multi-sensory experience design.

xlab is a creative space dedicated to the advancement of applied research and design for the senses. We’re driven by the belief that we can create better, more memorable, and meaningful experiences when we approach human-centred design by prioritizing sensory perception, affect, and emotion.

What we’re exploring

  • Interdisciplinary research on the senses, affect, emotion, and perception
  • A sensory experience design practice that prioritizes affective and emotional engagement
  • Mixed sensory and interactive digital experiences in brick-and-mortar spaces that create possibilities for emotional engagement

Why focus on sensory experience?

  • We perceive the world through our senses. This impacts how we feel and think about things. And in turn, how we behave
  • Humans are not always rational actors. Emotions play a big part in determining what we like and dislike
  • Consumer behavioural research has shown that retail atmospherics and sensory stimuli can impact in-store shopper behaviour
  • Emotional connections have a direct correlation to customer loyalty
